Wobei nur die zweite der Damen wirklich existierte. Aber Stoff f\u00fcr eine Oper bieten sie allemal beide, wie die Komponisten Stephen Dodgson und Louis Karchin in ihren sehr unterschiedlichen Vertonungen bewiesen haben.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Der Roman \u201eJane Eyre\u201c, den die Schriftstellerin Charlotte Bront\u00eb 1847 unter m\u00e4nnlichem Pseudonym ver\u00f6ffentlichte, tr\u00e4gt autobiographische Z\u00fcge. Er erz\u00e4hlt von einer Gouvernante, die sich in den Hausherrn verliebt und ihn trotz gesellschaftlicher Konflikte heiratet. Fast zeitgleich erschien die Novelle \u201eThe History of Margaret Catchpole\u201c von Richard Cobbold. Auch sie handelt vom Schicksal eines Dienstm\u00e4dchens, beruht aber auf deren historischen Wahrheiten \u2013 der Autor war der Sohn ihrer Arbeitgeberin. Die junge Frau stahl ein Pferd, wurde deshalb inhaftiert, floh aus dem Gef\u00e4ngnis, wurde aufgegriffen und nach Australien verbannt. Dort baute sie sich ein neues, geachtetes Leben auf. Beide B\u00fccher waren im Viktorianischen Zeitalter ungemein popul\u00e4r. Doch w\u00e4hrend \u201eJane Eyre\u201c zum internationalen Klassiker wurde, erlangte Margaret Catchpole lediglich regionale Ber\u00fchmtheit in ihrer Heimat Suffolk. Anl\u00e4sslich ihres 200. Todestages 1979 kreierte der 2013 verstorbene Komponist Stephen Dodgson im Auftrag eines lokalen Kunstvereins die biographische Kammeroper \u201eMargaret Catchpole: Two Worlds Apart\u201c. Dodgson, dessen Musik sich generell durch ungew\u00f6hnliche Orchesterbesetzungen auszeichnet, benutzt diesmal elf Instrumente f\u00fcr aparte, filigrane Klangkombinationen, die den meist rezitativischen Gesang grundieren. Die Oper lebt vom Atmosph\u00e4rischen, speziell durch die Integration von englischen Folksongs sowie von tonmalerischen Natur- und Landschaftsstimmungen. Nur: Mit drei Stunden ist sie deutlich zu lang geraten. Gl\u00fccklicherweise kompensiert das gro\u00dfe Ensemble um Kate Howden in der Titelpartie zusammen mit der von Julian Perkins geleiteten Instrumentalgruppe Perpetuo dieses Manko durch nicht nachlassende Intensit\u00e4t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Im Gegensatz zu \u201eMargaret Catchpole\u201c fand \u201eJane Eyre\u201c nicht nur mehrfach den Weg auf die Leinwand, sondern auch auf die Musiktheaterb\u00fchne. Die j\u00fcngste Vertonung \u2013 sie wurde 2016 in New York uraufgef\u00fchrt \u2013 stammt vom amerikanischen Komponisten Louis Karchin, Jahrgang 1951. Seine Oper h\u00e4lt sich nahe an die Vorlage und transformiert sie geschickt in effektvolle Theatermusik. Die Tonsprache ist gem\u00e4\u00dfigt modern, es gibt traditionelle Arien und Duette, dazu Gesellschaftsbilder im Parlando. H\u00f6hepunkte sind die leidenschaftlichen Liebesszenen, insbesondere das Finale, das sich in \u00fcppigen Harmonien steigert, als seien Sp\u00e4tromantiker wie Korngold zur\u00fcckgekehrt. Jennifer Zetlan singt die Jane Eyre anr\u00fchrend und mit unersch\u00f6pflichen Sopranreserven, dabei vorbildlich artikulierend. Auch Ryan MacPherson ist ein Rochester von Format. Mit Inbrunst und ohne Forcieren setzt er seinen heldischen Tenor ein. Hinzu kommen sieben Solistinnen und Solisten, die sich in jeweils mehreren Partien bew\u00e4hren. Am Pult des auf zeitgen\u00f6ssische Musik spezialisierten Orchestra of the League of Composers steht der Komponist selbst.
