Bis wieder einmal ein Zahnriemen im Getriebe der menschlichen Evolution verkeilt und unser Weltbild ins Wanken bringt. Unzweifelhaftes Paradebeispiel unserer Zeit: Corona. Was macht das mit uns, wenn eine Pandemie unsere Zukunftspl\u00e4ne unter krachendem Get\u00f6se einst\u00fcrzen l\u00e4sst, wo finden wir Antworten? Nicht zuf\u00e4llig hat die Seuchenliteratur gerade Hochkonjunktur: Albert Camus\u2019 \u201eDie Pest\u201c, diverse Chronologien der Spanischen Grippe \u2013 oder auch Daniel Defoes fiktiver Dokumentarbericht \u201eA Journal of the Plague Year\u201c von 1722. Letzteren hat Kobie van Rensburg jetzt am Theater Krefeld und M\u00f6nchengladbach zu einem \u201eOpernpasticcio in virtueller Realit\u00e4t\u201c verarbeitet, gepaart mit Musik von Henry Purcell (und zwei weiterer englischer Barockkomponisten). Das Ergebnis ist ein \u00fcberaus erfrischender Impuls abseits schlie\u00dfbedingter Verlegenheitsl\u00f6sungen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201eThe Plague\u201c nimmt uns mit in ein Phantasie-England anno 1665\/66. Damals forderte die \u201eGro\u00dfe Pest von London\u201c gesch\u00e4tzte 100.000 Todesopfer, etwa ein Viertel der Bev\u00f6lkerung. Diese katastrophale Epidemie transferiert van Rensburg Corona-bedingt in den digitalen Raum. S\u00e4mtliche Aufnahmen seines Opernfilms wurden im Blue-Screen-Verfahren gedreht und mittels VR-Animation in minuti\u00f6ser Kleinarbeit montiert. Konzeption, Ausstattung, Gesamtregie, Kamera, Schnitt, Postproduktion \u2013 Arbeitsschritte, die allesamt vom S\u00fcdafrikaner verantwortet wurden. Das Ergebnis: eine artifizielle und bis zu einem gewissen Grad doch auch realistische \u00c4sthetik am Reibungspunkt von Statik und Dynamik, gehalten in postmoderner Schwarz-Wei\u00df-Optik. Vor folienartigen Kulissen nimmt ein neunk\u00f6pfiges Ensemble in historischen Sp\u00e4trenaissance-Kost\u00fcmen wechselnde Rollen im \u201eSpiel des Lebens\u201c ein. Im Verlauf der knapp siebzigmin\u00fctigen Produktion breites sich ein sattes Panorama existenzieller Reaktionen auf eine verheerende Seuche aus: Wir begegnen sterbenden, trauernden, fliehenden und leugnenden Menschen. Wir werden Zeuge von Panik und Feierwut, Gottesfurcht und Scharlatanerie, Mitgef\u00fchl und Egoismus, erwachender Liebe und Abschied auf ewig. Dass im (auch filmischen) Spiel mit den Perspektiven immer wieder assoziative Br\u00fccken zur Gegenwart aufscheinen, van Rensburg aber nicht der Versuchung erliegt, diese in platten Bildern zu servieren, ist ein gro\u00dfer Verdienst der Produktion. Coronale Bez\u00fcge sind so \u00fcberlegt und zur\u00fcckhaltend platziert, dass sie nicht belehrend aufsto\u00dfen (darunter eine charmante kleine Klopapier-Choreo).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So reizvoll die Bespielung barocker Musik mit Bildern aus dem virtuellen Baukasten auch ist: Ohne ein tragf\u00e4higes Ensemble bliebe nicht viel mehr als eine sch\u00f6ne Idee auf dem Papier. Doch auch hier agiert das Haus auf hohem Niveau. Die Meisterschaft der barocken Emotionsskala geb\u00fchrt dabei klar den Damen: Wie Maya Blausteins Selbstgei\u00dfelung zu einem nuancierten Affekt des Wahnsinns ger\u00e4t, wie Susanne Seefing feine Zynik aufblitzen l\u00e4sst und Chelsea Kolic ein herzzerrei\u00dfendes Lamento anstimmt, ist gro\u00dfe Opernkunst f\u00fcr den kleinen Bildschirm.
